English is rapidly becoming the world's language of the 21st Century and is overwhelmingly the second language of choice throughout the world. As a progressive college RGS works hard to ensure all students are given the opportunity and encouragement to bring their English language skills up to the level required for their academic study. We further support our students with English for Academic Study courses, providing the skills necessary for the style of study in the UK, with its focus on academic writing, research and study skills and independent learning. Once you start an academic course the college continues to support you with Academic writing classes within your academic timetable

General English

These courses are for students wishing to improve their English Language skills in progressive stages building towards fluency. They cover the basic language skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing with an additional focus on pronunciation and academic writing. See the course descriptions for pre-intermediate, intermediate and upper intermediate levels to see what you will be able to do after each of these courses.

ESOL Skills for Life

ESOL contributes to the Government's Skills for Life initiative by providing assessment for those candidates seeking to:

• Enhance their knowledge of English
• Develop their interpersonal communication skills in a British community
• Improve their understanding of life in the UK
• Progress towards and achieve the language criteria for naturalisation/UK citizenship
• Progress towards and achieve, personal and economic independence
• Take part in day to day social and cultural activities using the English language
